Why is the Test Report menu showing up on my Android phone?

A “Test Report” menu popping up on an Android phone is usually a sign that the phone has entered a diagnostic or factory test mode. This is common on Android devices and is not malware in most cases. Here are the main reasons it happens and what to do:

Common Reasons

  1. Hardware test mode was triggered

    • Certain key combinations (like volume + power) can accidentally open a factory test or QC (quality control) menu.

    • This is more common after a restart or battery drain.

  2. Engineer / diagnostic app enabled

    • Some phones (especially budget or OEM devices) ship with hidden diagnostic apps used by technicians.

    • These can surface as “Test Report”, “Hardware Test”, or “QC Test”.

  3. Faulty buttons

    • A stuck or malfunctioning volume button can repeatedly trigger test mode.

    • This is very common after drops or liquid exposure.

  4. Software glitch or incomplete update

    • A failed system update or corrupted system file can cause the phone to boot into test-related menus.

  5. Third-party testing app

    • If a phone-testing or benchmarking app was installed (even unknowingly), it may be launching automatically.

What You Should Do (Step by Step)

  1. Restart the phone normally

    • Hold Power → Restart (not Recovery or Safe Mode).

  2. Check your buttons

    • Press Volume Up/Down a few times to ensure none is stuck.

  3. Boot into Safe Mode

    • If the menu does NOT appear in Safe Mode, a third-party app is the cause.

    • Uninstall recently installed apps (especially phone test or repair apps).

  4. Clear cache partition (if you know how)

    • This fixes many system glitches without deleting data.

  5. Factory reset (last resort)

    • Only if the issue persists and after backing up your data.

When to Worry

  • If the menu keeps popping up after every restart

  • If touch stops working or the phone reboots randomly
→ This usually points to a hardware issue (buttons or motherboard).
